Slay the Spire 2 Character Guide 2026: Every Class Ranked, Best Cards & Win Conditions

I climbed to Ascension 15 with the Ironclad and thought I understood the game. Then I tried the Defect and lost 8 runs in a row before Act 2. Every character plays like a different game. Here's how to win with each.

The Ironclad — best beginner character, high ascension viable

Playstyle: Strength scaling + self-damage synergy. Deal damage, take damage, heal back with Reaper. Ironclad's starter relic (Burning Blood — heal 6 HP after combat) is the best sustain in the game. You can path through elites more aggressively than any other character.

Win conditions: Strength stacking (Limit Break + Demon Form + Heavy Blade → 100+ damage per attack), Exhaust engine (Corruption + Dark Embrace + Feel No Pain → infinite block + damage every turn), Perfect Strike (stack as many 'Strike' cards as possible — surprisingly viable through Ascension 10).

Must-take cards: Whirlwind (AoE solves multi-enemy fights — Act 2 Slavers are free with Whirlwind), Spot Weakness (+4 Strength for 1 energy — better than Inflame at +2 Strength for 1), Reaper (heal 4 HP per enemy hit — at 20 Strength, hitting 3 enemies = 24 HP healed for 2 energy), Offering (draw 5 cards, lose 6 HP — HP is a resource for Ironclad, spend it).

Skip: Clash (dead card in any fight where enemies block), Fire Breathing (too slow, 6/10 damage per curse/status drawn requires build-around), Berserk (gain 1 Vulnerable to gain 1 Energy — terrible trade).

The Silent — highest skill ceiling

Playstyle: Poison stacking + shiv generation + discard synergy. Silent has the weakest Act 1 of any character and the strongest Act 3. Survive Act 1; dominate Act 3.

Win conditions: Poison engine (Noxious Fumes → Catalyst → Catalyst → enemy with 300 poison takes 300 damage per turn), Shiv engine (Infinite Blades + Accuracy + Wrist Blade relic → 20 damage shivs for 0 energy), Discard engine (Tactician + Reflex + Calculated Gamble → infinite draw + energy).

Must-take cards: Noxious Fumes (applies 2 poison to ALL enemies every turn passively — stack 2-3 copies and wait), Catalyst (triple enemy's poison — 10 becomes 30 becomes 90 becomes 270), Footwork (+2 Dexterity for 1 energy — Silent's best defensive card and it's not close), Wraith Form (intangible for 3 turns — you cannot lose HP for 3 turns).

Skip: Setup (waste 1 energy to make another card cost 0 — same energy spent, terrible tempo), Grand Finale (win-more card — 50 damage to all enemies but need exactly 0 cards in draw pile. You'll spend 3 turns manipulating your deck to play it, during which you die).

The Defect — orbs are your entire gameplan

Playstyle: Orb management. Lightning orbs (passive damage), Frost orbs (passive block), Dark orbs (accumulate damage, release for nuke), Plasma orbs (energy). If you're not Orb-focused on Defect, you're playing Defect wrong.

Win conditions: Frost turtle (stack 5+ Frost orbs + Capacitor + Focus → generate 50+ block passively every turn, enemies can't damage you while Lightning kills them), Power spam (Creative AI + Storm + Heat Sinks → generate 10+ powers per fight, Storm deals damage per power played), Dark nuke (Darkness + Dualcast → accumulate 100+ damage on Dark orb, Dualcast to one-shot any enemy).

Must-take cards: Defragment (+1 Focus for 1 energy — Focus is Defect's most important stat), Glacier (channel 2 Frost orbs + gain 7 block — 1 energy, best defensive card), Electrodynamics (Lightning hits all enemies instead of random — turns Lightning orbs into AoE), Echo Form (first card played each turn is played twice — strongest power in the game across all characters).

Skip: Claw (meme card — 3 damage +2 per Claw played. Good for laughs, not for Ascension 20), Hello World (add random common card to hand each turn — random commons pollute your deck).

The Watcher — most complex, highest winrate ceiling

Playstyle: Stance dancing between Calm (+2 energy on exit) and Wrath (deal double damage, take double damage). Watcher is a deckbuilder's character. Misplay Wrath = dead in one turn.

Win conditions: Stance dance infinite (Rushdown + 1-cost Calm + 1-cost Wrath → infinite energy + draw = infinite damage), Divinity (Blasphemy + Ragnarok → enter Divinity immediately, deal 3x damage, win fight), Retain pressure (Protect + Windmill Strike + Sands of Time → retain block and damage, unleash on correct turn).

Must-take cards: Rushdown (draw 2 cards when entering Wrath — this enables infinite combo, most broken card in STS2), Talk to the Hand (deal 7 damage + gain 2 block per unblocked hit this combat — wins every Heart fight by itself), Vault (skip enemy turn, take another turn — skip enemy's 40-damage Hyper Beam and kill them), Wallop (deal 9 damage + gain 9 block — Strength scaling on both).

Skip: Conjure Blade and Just Lucky — not worth the draw.
